City is proud to possess a professional bodybuilder and Punjabi wrestler Varinder Singh Ghuman who not only grabbed the title of Mr. India 2009 but now has flaunted his gigantic and well built physique in his released movies.
Ghuman is already well-known for being the world’s first vegetarian bodybuilder with 22 inches biceps among his fan following and they have seen his acting skills as a lead role of ‘Shingara Singh’ in his first movie. The film was based on the notion of promoting sports and sportsmanship.
Recalling about his movie Ghuman reveals, “The whole story line was around a village boy Shingara Singh who dreams to take his mother game of Punjab from muddy and bare ground to the green turf of international standards. His dream gets devastated when he comes to know that Kabaddi is not mere a sport but is a big game of illegal human trafficking, drug mafia and match fixing and later he takes an oath to get back the glory of mother game Kabaddi. But as usual the path is not so easy and there are numerous obstacles in the way of his success. But he has a great heart and muscles to fight against such evil forces.”
The shooting of the film was done in three major schedules at Punjab, Mumbai and England.
Ask him about the message the movie provided he says, “This film exploits the truth behind bad sportsman and how match-fixing is done in Kabaddi with the use of illegal drugs and fake players. It was a film that will surely teach you a lesson or two and you will come out inspired and motivated to not only play Kabaddi but to turn your backs towards the use of these sports enhancing drugs.”
‘With the use of light comedy it was a pure family film where everyone will laugh and enjoy together’ claims Ghuman.
Prior acting, Ghuman has also won the title of Mr. Asia 2009 and is the only fortunate Indian Youngman who participated in Arnold Classics 2010 held in USA and stood sixth in the world making his fans and family proud of him. He has been selected as the Captain of Indian Body Building Team for 2010-11 world competition. He also secured 9th position at International Federation of Body Builders (IFBB) Grand Prix Australia in 2011 and became a first Indian in the category of Pro card holder which is an elite class of bodybuilding in itself.
To become a professional bodybuilder and then a wrestler was not so easy job for him. Belonging to a family where his grandfather – a hockey player and father a Kabaddi player, Ghuman was not so interested in building his body.
He adds, “It was in year 2004 when I saw Mr. India posing at District Championship which boosted my morale and I pledged to achieve the same. After the hard practice and severe workouts I finally obtained the body which made it suitable to grab Mr. Jalandhar, Mr. Punjab and Mr. India and then many other heights later.”
