Water, water, everywhere, nor a drop to drink

During childhood days, we used to learn the story of a thirsty crow. But today, the condition in Capital is that the Delhiites have worn the caps of this thirsty crow and are praying for water availability. It’s my first summers in Delhi. Earlier I heard about the water scarcity here but now-a-days I’m experiencing it. And you know what? It really irritates when you don’t have a single drop of water in water tank and sees the pathetic approach of civil authorities.

As far as water is concerned then Punjab is the best. At least at my place in Jalandhar, I never confronted this issue. Here in Delhi, I stay in Govindpuri area and we have been facing water shortage since last month. With the temperature at its peak, forcing us to stay indoors on weekends, people here are facing acute shortage of water.

People hopefully sleep at night to wake up at 3:30 am in the morning as water comes around 3:40am. But when there are no drops to be seen in the tap, they feel helpless. If it comes, then hardly for ten minutes! In evening, we are bestowed with dirty and smelly water that is just usable to flush.

Paramjeet Kaur, resident of Govindpuri street number 11 and my landlord aunty rues, “Well, this time we are facing this problem to a larger extent. We are buying water bottles from outside to drink and the sellers are taking the benefit of this situation and are selling the bottles between 30-70/-.  How many days we can live like this? Buying bottles every day from outside and when needed then water tankers are too called to fill our water tanks. This surely is disturbing our budgets.”

A group of the street number 11 have also approached authorities a couple of times but as always to no use. They hear from one ear and you know the very next thing. Not only in our street, entire South Delhi is now facing the water scarcity. To one’s surprise, street number 10 of Govindpuri is enjoying full water availability twice a day.

Moreover, not only water, we have started facing power cuts too. Not too long cuts but yes I feel that the duration of these cuts will be longer in coming days.

On a personal note, these summers are taking a toll over me. You switch off the AC and the ceiling fan will start giving you hot air. Oh, I recall, in case we have water in the morning for bath, then that is also hot! But please, this is not at all equivalent to steam bath.

Thanks to my workplace where I can spend maximum day time in AC for five days a week and pray that this problem to be solved at the earliest because not only few but major chunk of Delhi population is facing a tough time without water, as you are already aware of ‘n’ number of domestic uses of water. Hope this message reaches to the concerned authorities. ‘Kya AAP sun rahe hain?’
